A Musical & Spiritual Synthesis Transcending Genres
The central focus, through Joy's vibrant voice and instantly recognizable style, is a message of well being, a feeling of fulfillment and peace in any style. With this message, an entire world of music from an entire world of genres is available to be sung. Joy's versatile repertoire spans some 4,000 pieces of popular music and original creations. With everything she sings, there is a desire to create well being.
Music is a life-affirming process. This music affirms individual freedom of belief, strength of conviction, self-realization, harmony, discovery. The music and the lyrics have been created to allow the space to remember, reflect, feel. Joy frequently refers to her work as Non-Angst Music. The emotion of angst surrounded by a circle with a slash through it. There is no angst here. In a world in which much popular music and culture provoke anger, frustration, and intimidation, and resolutions of conflict often are obtained only through violence, there are artists who express themselves with the sheer intent to melt away tension, create self-awareness, fulfillment, serenity, peace of mind. Joy is one of those individuals.
An Inspiring Musical Background & A Universal Message
Over decades, Joy has studied and come to appreciate faiths worldwide. Jewish by birth and conviction, she has sung Israeli, Yiddish, and liturgical music since her youth. At a certain point within her professional career, she decided that there was no longer a need to divide her repertoire by genre. Creating folk, new age, and contemporary pop-inspired songs, and performing works that ranged from Big Band Standards to Broadway & Hollywood to Yiddish/Israeli Ethnic material, she observed a cohesive theme emerging within her work a connection to spiritual discovery, upliftment, personal empowerment, the acknowledgement and overcoming of pain. She made a conscious decision to write music and lyrics that lift rather than tear down. Within this common theme, all music with an empowering, inspiring message is appropriate. The ability to blend cohesively and seamlessly an eclectic selection of compositions that are seemingly worlds apart is a reflection of the skill of the artist. In this respect, Joy is notably skillful, effortlessly uniting these many song styles through her consistent style of performance and common message.
While Adult Contemporary, New Age Contemporary, Jewish Renewal, New Thought, and Contemporary Cabaret are genres that describe Joy's versatile, yet universal compositions and performances, a concert, class, or recording by her truly is an experience. Uniquely interweaving her one-of-a-kind personality and message of well being with stories, teaching, and songs that range from popular songbook standards to folk, adult contemporary, stage and film, ethnic, and inspirational, she blends the elements so creatively and seamlessly that all music becomes ONE genre, ONE world message, a message of unity and common experience.
New Thought Music
New Thought music proceeds from the basic premise that we are all spiritual beings. New Thought music is designed to lift the spirit, sooth, heal, and empower through concepts of love, oneness, unity, creativity, celebration, and the transformational power of music.
The New Thought movement was born some 150 years ago as a revolt against negative dogma. The movement's creators discovered that the power of awareness of mind could and did heal physical illness as well as mental turmoil. Today's New Thought Movement which encompasses individuals of all faiths and cultures seeks to build individual and communal consciousness that heals through self-awareness. New Thought musicians are a voice for peace and well being worldwide, honoring the unity of humanity. In the words of one of the New Thought Movement's international organizations, The Association for Global New Thought:
"Once called the "religion of healthy-mindedness" by the philosopher, William James, the New Thought movement ... was driven by the discovery that physical healing was possible through the power of mind and spiritual awareness. As that initial idea unfolded into successful application, practitioners of New Thought began to see that the power of an uplifted consciousness could also bring healing to negative circumstances and conditions in one's personal life. As it evolves today, twenty-first century New Thought is driven by a far broader intention. Planetary healing through self-realization is emerging as the new promise of these teachings ... We invite you to learn more about this movement and its global initiatives for peace, justice and healing, and in the process discover your own spiritual calling ... We help individuals to discover and draw upon the power of God within them to live fully." (http://www.agnt.org/)
In the mid-90s, Joy began contributing music to a number of Unity congregations which are affiliated with the New Thought movement. While often compared to Unitarianism and New Age philosophies, Unity as a spiritual movement is distinct. These movements do have common threads, however, including the goal of self-awareness and respect for individuals of all faiths. The Unity Movement affirms the diversity and sacred worth of every human being. Unity congregations employ meditation and stress the power of prayer within their worship services. Joy served for nine years as Music Director of Unity Center For Today in north Tampa. She now contributes music to numerous New Thought congregations and feels a common bond with the goals and messages of the New Thought Movement, which only serve to strengthen her own Jewish experience and convictions.
Vast Healing Properties of Music & Art
Vast scientific studies show that the body literally physically changes from a state of stress and fear to a state of relaxation and creativity when in contact with music and art. The pattern of brain waves actually changes, balancing the body's nervous system, hormones, and brain neurotransmitters. Blood flow increases, blood pressure drops, positive emotions heighten, and the mind frees itself to be hopeful and positive, even without the conscious decision to do so. Every cell in the body is affected.
Numerous studies further prove that music and art even more powerfully and positively affect the participant and the listener/observer when there is an intention to uplift. Music that specifically has been created to soothe the body, release stress and pain, and unleash creativity within the listener has a greater ability to do so!
By now, through the popular Mozart and classical music compilations designed to increase children's intelligence, we are aware that music is a powerful tool to build intellectual flexibility and creativity - not just for youngsters but for individuals of all ages. There is, in fact, no age limit for music's positive powers. Music study, music performance, and music appreciation are as remarkably beneficial for the elderly as for tots. Blood pressure drops, mental power increases, and creative skills improve for ALL ages. So if you've been telling yourself it's too late to teach an old dog new tricks, change your tune - literally and figuratively. Take a music class, study a musical instrument, join a drum circle, participate in a dance group or class, choir or barbershop ensemble. Add more music you love to your music library. You are only limited by the creative possibilities you are willing to try.
