Joy explores the Sounds of the Sixties the most eclectic musical decade in American history in depth through several class series this first of which, "Doo-Wop to Dooby-Dooby-Doo," examines Doo Wop, The Surfer Sound, and the Classic MOR Popular Songbook artists of the decade. Doo-wop refers to the richly harmonic vocal stylings that inspired all forms of pop music from the fifties forward, including R&B/soul, the California sound, bubble-gum, pop/rock, and surf music. Artists strongly influenced by doo-wop included Little Anthony & The Imperials, Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers, The Platters, Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, The Beach Boys, Jan & Dean, Dion, Franki Valli & the Four Seasons, The Supremes, Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello, The Ronettes, Gerry & the Pacemakers, Simon & Garfunkel, The Fifth Dimension, The Searchers, Herman's Hermits, Chubby Checker, Joey Dee & The Starlighters, Lesley Gore, Petula Clark, The Mamas & the Papas, the Lovin' Spoonful, The Association, and the Turtles. In addition to the new sounds created by doo-wop artists, the MOR genre was of great influence including concert, stage, film, and recorded works of classic artists such as Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Julie Andrews, Andy Williams, Barbra Streisand, Bobby Darin, Robert Goulet, and Sammy Davis, Jr., among many others. These artists melded classic songs of previous decades and a new repertoire into a unique musical experience that would help define the decade.

Joy explores the Sounds of the Sixties the most eclectic musical decade in American history in depth through several class series this second of which, "Power to the People!" explores significant Folk, West Coast Pop-Rock and Folk-Rock, and Country music of the Sixties. In this decade, the music was shaped by the message. Social and civil rights, peace and free love were themes dominating the arts, with a vast range of concerts, touring performers and revues, and outdoor festivals that entertained monumentally large audiences of all social backgrounds. From Pete Seeger to Peter Paul & Mary, Judy Collins, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, the Kingston Trio, Trini Lopez, The Rooftop Singers, Janice Ian, Simon & Garfunkel ... Johnny Cash to Lynn Anderson, Tammy Wynette, Kris Kristofferson, Conway Twitty, Kenny Rogers, Bobbie Gentry, Merle Haggard, George Jones, Glen Campbell, Roger Miller, Chet Atkins, Ray Price, and Marty Robbins ... From Creedence Clearwater Revival to Crosby Stills Nash & Young, the Mamas & the Papas, Linda Ronstadt, The Association, Mason Williams, The Righteous Brothers, Fifth Dimension, the Doors and more. You'll love experiencing vintage performances of the decade. Sixties music would pave the way for social communal change that would inspire, ironically, the Me Generation of the Seventies.

Across the world during harvest seasons, people of all cultures come together to give thanks for a bountiful harvest, for family love, home, and heritage. In this inspiring cconcert program at the grand piano, Joy explores universal messages of Thanksgiving from harvest and reaping songs and hymns from around the world. For fruitful crops and yields, peoples of all cultures expressed thanks and gave sacrifice. For the bounties of the New World and the future possibilities that spring from the gifts of freedom, American settlers and Presidents expressed proclamations for Thanksgiving Day over the centuries. For the beauties of nature and the support of friendship and family, writers and musicians of every creed have created passionate expressions of praise. As the entire human family assembles in these seasons to share common bonds of gratitude, we too will gather to hear and sing the melodies that celebrate our seasons of thanksgiving and seek to uplift our souls.

This is no joke: prepare to laugh until your sides hurt! Together they developed one of the funniest comic acts in the business, The 2000-Year-Old Man, which has enjoyed a five decade success.. Each created one of the most successful TV situation comedies of the sixties: Reiner's The Dick Van Dyke Show and Brooks' Get Smart! The two would go on to write, produce, direct and star in iconic film, TV, and stage productions from Reiner's The Thrill of It All, The Russians Are Coming, The Russians are Coming!, It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World, Oh, God!, The Jerk, All of Me, Ocean's Eleven (among many others) to Brooks' The Producers, The Twelve Chairs, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, Silent Movie, High Anxiety, History of the World, Part I, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, and Dracula: Dead and Loving It (among many others). The two have enjoyed more than a 50-year friendship and partnership and and have been an inspiration and a joy to a worldwide audience.
LIGHT AS AIR: MARGE AND GOWER CHAMPION
Eckerd College Elderhostel/Road Scholar Programs, St. Petersburg, FL
http://www.eckerd.edu/roadscholar/
November 14-16, 2011 • Mon. & Tues., Nov. 14-15, 8:30-11:45 a.m. & Mon., Nov 14., 1:00-2:30 p.m.
Often compared to Astaire & Rogers, the immensely popular husband and wife team of Marge & Gower Champion created some of the most visually stunning, memorable and groundbreaking dance scenes in lavish 1950's MGM musicals like Show Boat, Lovely To Look At, Three For the Road, and Jupiter's Darling. But their careers embraced so much more, with critically acclaimed and innovative dance in musical revue, musical comedy, and musical drama on stage and television as well as film. Additionally, each enjoyed successful individual careers aside of their work together. Gower would become one of the most successful and influential Broadway Director-Choreographers during America's Golden Age of Musicals, crafting the stage design and movement of powerhouse shows such as Bye Bye Birdie, Carnival, Hello, Dolly!, and 42nd Street. A master of the form, he would join the ranks of most revered performer/choreographers like Jerome Robbins, Bob Fosse, and Michael Bennett. Marge would appear in film and would serve as a choreographer and consultant to acclaimed productions such as Queen of the Stardust Ballroom. Their story is the story of the American musical on film and stage during its heydey.

Joy explores the Sounds of the Sixties the most eclectic musical decade in American history in depth through several class series this third of which, "Groovin' to the Beat," examines Blues, R&B, Soul and Funk to the British Invasion. With a deep appreciation of American blues and soul, British singer/songwriters such as the the Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Animals, Searchers, Gerry & the Pacemakers, Swinging Blue Jeans, The Kinks, The Merseybeats, Eric Clapton, and The Who expressed their rebellion by emulating the roots music of Muddy Waters, Lead Belly, and Robert Johnson as well as the modern soulful sounds of Big Joe Turner, James Brown, Ray Charles, Dinah Washington, Della Reese, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, The Tempations, Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, Sly & the Family Stone, and many other soul artists of Motown, Philadelphia, Stax, and Atlantic Records. As these artists inspired one another to evolve into new musical genres, concerts and recordings, other artists such as Petula Clark, Dusty Springfield, the Supremes, Peter & Gordon, Tom Jones, Herman's Hermits, Oliver, and Donovan, among others, were inspired by classic pop and stage musical styles to write and create new songs and recordings that, even today, remain among the top-selling and best remembered songs of the century. You'll love re-discovering the music of these brilliant artists through vintage performances of the decade.

Here is a woman who truly has done it all. Stand-up and screwball comedian (in an era when a refined woman just didn't DO that sort of thing), Tony-Award winning musical star and actress, creator & host of one of the most successful television series in history (The Carol Burnett Show ran for 11 years and won more than 20 Emmy Awards), Golden-Globe nominated dramatic and comedic film and television actress, top-selling writer (Her 2010 autobiography This Time Together, was re-released in paperback in March 2011.), Emmy and Golden-Globe award-winning recurring and guest star of numerous television series and TV specials for three decades, recipient of a Peabody Award, 2003 Kennedy Center Honors, and Presidential Metal of Freedom in 2005. Simply put, Burnett has enjoyed one of the longest and most beloved careers in show business. Yet she writes that many of her fondest memories are from her renowned Q&A session with her audiences. Recognized not only for her amazing wit, physical flexibility, and brilliant solo comic and dramatic instincts, her Carol Burnett Show is additionally notable as one of the finest ensemble works ever created. It is impossible to think of Burnett without recalling her sidekicks, Harvey Korman, Tim Conway, Vicki Lawrence, and Lyle Waggoner. Their classic skits like Mr. Tudball & Mrs. Wiggins, Mama's Family, and Went With the Wind have become legendary and were often unrehearsed in order to allow sponteneity. The family-friendly variety comedy of The Carol Burnett Show is a lost art. "I never purposefully wanted to hurt anybody or get edgy without really being funny," says Burnett. Her physical skills, costumes, pratfalls, and brilliance of timing still inspire huge guffaws from her audiences today. Burnett will always be remembered for her creativity, her authenticity, and her class.

America's Singing Sweethearts of the 1930's and '40's, Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy created a collection of film classics that continually enchant and inspire. Naughty Marietta, Rose Marie, Girl of the Golden West, I Married an Angel, Sweethearts, and Maytime, among others, are counted among the finest films of Hollywood's Golden Age. Eddy and MacDonald were very much inside the public eye, their every move followed by fans and the media. The two were often together privately as well, sharing a deep affection and admiration. Their film scores the classic operettas of Victor Herbert, Sigmund Romberg, and Rudolf Friml, along with the romantic lyrics of Oscar Hammerstein II and Otto Harbach among others vividly captured the magical blend of their voices, enhanced further by their stunning figures onscreen. Today they remain notable symbols of their era and the early power of film musicals. Their voices have inspired countless individuals to follow musical careers, and their beauty onscreen still mirrors the the beautiful fantasies created by early Hollywood.

(In conjunction with Ruth Eckerd Hall's presentation of "Memphis," February 7-12, 2012)
In February 2012, Ruth Eckerd Hall features the acclaimed national touring production of the hit Broadway musical, Memphis. The city's legendary Beale Street, Sun Studios, and Stax Records with their blues and rock'n'roll giants such as W.C. Handy and Elvis are well known. But there's so much more to the diverse, colorful history and culture of Memphis than you may have imagined. We'll explore Memphis from its origins as a home to the Chickasaw Indians and early discoveries of Spanish explorers to its rising influence as a river port and its development as a metropolis. Great events have shaped this city, including the Civil War and civil rights, the mighty Mississippi and the cotton trade, the dreadful yellow fever epidemic of the 19th century that wrought havoc and very nearly destroyed the entire city to visionary and miraculous treatments made possible through the legacy of Danny Thomas and St. Jude Hospital as well as one of the world's most impressive complexes of hospitals and innovative medical facilities. As a native Memphian, Joy Katzen-Guthrie is passionate about Memphis. She will share with you the many aspects of this city that have inspired her life as well as so much of the music and culture that has shaped American culture.

LIGHT AS AIR: MARGE AND GOWER CHAMPION
Eckerd College Elderhostel/Road Scholar Programs, St. Petersburg, FL
http://www.eckerd.edu/roadscholar/
January 10-11, 2012 • Tues., Jan 10, 7:00-8:30 p.m. & Wed., Jan 11, 8:30-11:45 a.m. and 1:00-2:30 p.m.

One of television's true legends, mutli-award winning late night talk host, Johnny Carson, was a genius of casual conversation and comedy. Born in Corning, Iowa, his family moved to Norfolk, Nebraska, the town he called home from the age of eight. As a teenager, Carson displayed budding entertainment talent when he purchased a mail order magic kit and practiced day and night. By 14, he was entertaining locally as "The Great Carsoni." The magic cards and tricks joined him as he continued to perform while in the Navy, at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, as a local emcee, and in a broadcast career that began in 1950. Extraordinary skills as a comic, satirist, conversationalist, and TV host were apparent as Carson moved to California and stretched his television experience within interview formats, game shows, prime time and variety programs. Some were forgotten virtually overnight. Others allowed him to display his spontaneous wit, rocketing him to fame as a daytime and later nighttime sensation. Debuting as host of the Tonight Show along with his sidekick Ed McMahon, Carson blazed new territory with unique continuing characters and sketches and a format that became the template for all late night interview shows to follow. We'll view Carson's extraordinary life from his childhood to his final show, see him privately and publicly, and enjoy highlights from the best of his television career a career that spanned five decades and influenced popular television creativity and culture perhaps more than that of any other individual in history.

We call the earliest age of American commercial television from 1948 until 1960 the “Golden Age.” During this period, virtually every television program was live and almost everything that happened in the creation of programming was an innovation. Variety vaudeville-style shows proliferated, along with the developing genres of situation comedy, drama, westerns, game shows, crime dramas, and comedy sketch revues. As the economy grew and the era became known for its vast consumerism, advertisers took advantage of the new medium to present their products favorably before a national audience on a plethora of shows: Sundays with Ed Sullivan and the Colgate Comedy Hour. Tuesdays with Uncle Miltie in the Texaco Star Revue. Thursdays with Burns & Allen and Westinghouse Playhouse 90. Saturdays with Your Show of Shows. The pioneers of this new medium changed the way we viewed the world and ourselves. We’ll take a time trip through this important early era of television, experiencing notable highlights of the variety of genres available ... from Toast of the Town • the Colgate Comedy Hour with Abbott & Costello • Martin & Lewis • Spike Jones • the Texaco Star Theatre with Milton Berle • Person to Person with Edward R. Murrow • The Twilight Zone • Ernie Kovaks • the Red Skelton Show • Playhouse 90 • You Bet Your Life • The Untouchables • Studio One • Steve Allen • I Love Lucy • Make Room for Daddy • The Jack Benny Show • Phil Silvers as Sgt. Bilko, and more.

A favorite of the Hollywood studios was American-Irish and traditional Irish song and dance and nobody was better at it than Gene Kelly and Judy Garland, along with the amazing repertory company of MGM. The Irish and their descendents, the Irish love of family and struggle for success, Irish immigrants in America, fantasy Irish characters, and the biographies of Irish performers, songwriters, and producers have long been the subjects of Hollywood film. Irish songs were favorites at all major studios, featuring the gifted voice and footwork of James Cagney, Alice Faye, Bing Crosby, Marion Davies, Betty Grable, Doris Day, Bob Hope, Dennis Morgan, and Gordon MacRae among others. Celebrate St. Patrick's Day with some of Hollywood's most delightful and moving depictions of Ireland, its people, and its music.

(In conjunction with Ruth Eckerd Hall's presentation of "South Pacific," April 6-7, 2012)
In April 1949, New York City's Majestic Theatre was the scene of the Broadway premiere of what would become one of the greatest musicals of the 20th century. South Pacific opened to unanimous raves following a pre-Broadway run in Connecticutt and Boston that was such a phenomenon that playwright George S. Kaufman joked that Boston theatregoers lining up at the Shubert Theatre "don't actually want anything ... They just want to push money under the doors." The musical was based on James A. Michener's Pulitzer Prize-winning book published in 1947, a collection of stories inspired by Michener's observations while serving as US Navy Lieutenant Commander on the island of Espiritu Santo in the New Hebrides Islands during WWII. The stories "Fo' Dollah" and "Our Heroine," featuring Bloody Mary, Liat, Lieutenant Cable, Nellie Forbush and Emile de Becque, proved to be magnificent material for a musical adaptation by Oscar Hammerstein II and Joshua Logan with score by Rodgers and Hammerstein. Since then, South Pacific has gone on to become a legend, not only for its nearly 5-year premiere Broadway stage run that took home ten Tony Awards, but in film, at Carnegie Hall, and in limitless revival worldwide. Enjoy this opportunity to truly appreciate the masterful collaboration of literary and musical talent that made South Pacific a feast for our senses.
